阿拉曼戰爭
較精確的說，戰史上的阿拉曼戰役指的是「第二場阿拉曼戰役」(Second Battle of El Alamein)；這場令雙方都陷入苦戰的戰役，從 1942 年的 10 月 23 日一直鏖戰到 11 月 3 日 (於同年 7 月的首場戰役，雙方都未能獲得重大的戰果而以僵局結束，但盟軍傷亡慘重)。

蒙哥馬利將軍 (General Montgomery) 花費了數個月的時間，將英國、澳大利亞、紐西蘭、南非、印度以及法國的部隊整編成一支精良的大型兵團， 而在戰場上的另一方，由德軍隆美爾元帥 (Marshal Rommel) 所率領的德義聯合部隊，不只人數只有盟軍一半，還面臨了增援兵員不足和後勤補給短缺的困境。

雙方在距離埃及亞歷山大港 (Port of Alexandria) 60 英哩處的阿拉曼小鎮短兵相接。

遭遇初期，盟軍以優勢的火力對德軍陣地發動自一次世界大戰以來最猛烈的砲擊，旋即再以裝甲師攻擊德軍防線，但卻陷入隆美爾所佈署的地雷區內動彈不得。

經過十天不分晝夜的持續進攻，盟軍終於在一次激烈的夜戰中突破了德軍的防線。軸心國部隊就一路撤退到突尼西亞。

憑弔阿拉曼戰役時，宛若置身中古世紀的戰場：兩軍壁壘分明的對峙、步步為營的戰術，以及果斷的行動，最終的結果則是一場決定性的勝利。

盟軍部隊一旦收復了法國，事實上已經讓軸心國部隊失去了歐陸的主戰場，從此無力回天。更重要的是，盟軍得以扼守北非和蘇彝士運河 (Suez Canal) – 從歐洲通往亞洲的要道。

「阿拉曼戰役」是盟軍日後能擊敗納粹德國國防軍 (Wehrmacht) 的首場主要戰役。邱吉爾日後曾表示：「這場戰役根本就是整個二次世界大戰勝負的轉捩點。」
