THE DOORS OF DURIN 都林之门

In times of wealth and peace the western entrance to Khazad-dûm stood open. Commerce thrived between Durin’s people and the neighbouring Elves. The doors themselves were a symbol of friendship between the two, wrought as they were by both Dwarven and Elven hands. Mithril mined within was spun with magic into ithildin letters and iconography that shone only in the light of the moon or stars. Upon their sheer surfaces were inlaid the initials of their makers, the king, and the riddling inscription ‘Speak friend and enter’.  

While the Dwarves enjoyed many long years of tranquil prosperity, the day finally came when war and death invaded Khazad-dûm and the Doors of Durin were sealed. By the waning years of the Third Age of Middle-earth, no Dwarf dared cross the threshold into the once proud empire of their people. Moria it was called, the Black Pit, home to Orcs and things far worse.  

So, it was when the Fellowship came to the Cliffs of Celebdil that they found the Doors closed and surrounded by decay. Even the once beautiful holly trees flanking the entranceway were deathly and pale, their roots drowned by a sickly black pool gathered before the gate. From beneath the murk, unfriendly eyes watched the companions as they paused and sought a way within.

BAG END ON THE HILL

Overlooking the village from the hill at the end of Bagshot Row is Bag End, the stately underground abode of the eccentric Hobbit Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo widely acknowledged about town as having ‘cracked’ some years ago, and his cousin and ward Frodo Baggins, whom he shares his home with, is certainly in the process of cracking. The Bagginses, it is said, consort with Wizards, Dwarves, and other folk with dangerous ideas. Bag End is a museum, its rooms stuffed with treasures, trinkets and oddities accumulated over the years by Bilbo either on his adventures or as gifts from his peculiar company.

But extraordinary as its occupants and contents might be, the abiding atmosphere of Bag End is one of lazy comfort, from the pretty but slightly overgrown gardens that hug its eaves to the welcoming clutter inside it labyrinthine chambers. Sprawling around the Hill beneath the shade of an old oak tree whose roots twist through its halls, the grand smial reflects the gentle good humour of its hosts and the universal Hobbit love of simple pleasures. There have been Bagginses living under the hill for as long as anyone can remember, and there always will be.

Bright round doors in summery hues dot the lush, grassy hillsides of Hobbiton like wildflowers. Behind each doorway, comfortably appointed burrows wind into earth: each one home to a Hobbit, or a family of the Shire’s rosy-cheeked little-folk.  

Crowned by the resplendent Bag End, Bagshot Row is dotted with a handful of more modest dwellings, bearing wreaths of flowers and painted door faces. 3 Bagshot Row is where notable occupants Samwise Gamgee and his wife Rosie Cotton reside after the War of the Ring.

Each an individual dwelling, the Hobbit holes lend themselves splendidly to creative placement in your cabinet. With a flat back and shallow depth of only 55mm, they can be placed on mantles, cornices, shelves and in windows.

This gorgeous little environment is an exacting miniature replica of the movie set that can be visited at Hobbiton in Matamata, New Zealand. It was designed by the same artists and craftspeople who worked on the movie.

Please note: This miniature environment was designed and prototyped here at the Workshop. Images are of a pre-production prototype. Each piece is painted by hand and slight variations will occur.
